Instagram competes with YouTube, launches long videos

Can't connect right now! In a kind of TV and YouTube hybrid, the app will be organized by channels, which will just lead you to each creator's page.

Instagram held an event in San Francisco, California, to unveil the new standalone app.

Aiming to take on Google-owned YouTube, popular photo-sharing platform Instagram announced it would allow users to upload videos up to one hour in length, up from the previous one-minute limit, adding that it has hit the milestone of one billion users worldwide.

"When people browse through the feed they don't want to stop and watch a 10-minute video", Systrom says. IGTV will start rolling globally over the next few weeks on Android and iOS.

There will be a stand-alone IGTV app, but the content will also be available on the existing Instagram app.

"With all of the cat videos, how do you find the creators you guys all love?" founder-CEO Kevin Systrom asked the crowd at the launch, according to Deadline.

Reports of minor explosion at London Tube station
A Twitter user with the handle @nakzokulah posted: "I was at Southgate Station when this commotion started". Trains are now not stopping at Southgate Tube station due to concerns over the suspicious package.

Not just celebrities, IGTV will let all users be a creator and let them upload vertical videos through Instagram's app or the web.

The launch comes amid a shift in video viewing habits away from traditional television to online platforms including Netflix and Hulu, and with more people watching both professional and user content on services like YouTube.

Systrom described the new app as "a separate space, a dedicated space to enjoy video without being distracted".

Instagram also touts that it now has 1 billion users, which is huge.

Facebook itself is also ramping up its video offerings with original shows and this week announced new formats including interactive game shows, quizzes and polls.
