It has become multivalent and a popular practice, thanks to a wave of revival in political and social circles.

Addressing the large gathering in the backdrop of the iconic British-era building of FRI, Modi said yoga had shown the world the way from "illness to wellness" and enriching lives across the globe.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday led the celebrations for fourth worldwide Yoga day across the country, describing it as the "biggest mass movement" that has shown the world the path from illness to wellness.

Modi said yoga presents a ray of hope for future of the world. It was said that top industry leaders followed the sessions with great enthusiasm.

Interest in yoga has surged in Myanmar over the past decade, as the country's growing middle class catches up on global trends once kept out under isolated military rule. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had proposed the idea of taking India's 5000-year-old Yoga tradition to every corner of the world. Most believe that yoga is not an exercise but a thought.

People there gathered at a sprawling forest research institute - snakes and monkeys were removed in advance - as far as they eye could see before dawn for the communal session involving the yoga-mad premier, an AFP reporter at the scene said. Lord "Shiva", the first yogi or guru began sharing knowledge about the spiritual practice to mankind on this day also known as "Guru Poornima".
