Microsoft unveils its smallest, cheapest Surface yet: The Surface Go

At US$399 (R5 350 before taxes at the time of writing), the device is $400 cheaper than the current Surface Pro tablet, but has slower Intel processors and about four hours less battery time, Microsoft said. Microsoft detailed the compact design in a TechNet blog post.

For normal home consumers, Surface Go will ship with the much-despised "S Mode" of Windows 10 Home, but you can turn off that mode at no cost.

The Surface Go will come in a variety of configurations with either 4GB or 8GB of ram, an Intel HD 615 GPU, 64/128/256 GB storage options, and a dual-core 1.60 ghz 7th Generation Intel Pentium Gold 4415Y processor, the Surface Go can easily run Office, browse the web, stream videos, and use many apps. At launch, it is available in a 4GB RAM / 64GB eMMC SKU for $399, and 8GB RAM / 128GB SSD SKU for $549. Businesses and schools buying the device will get Windows 10 Pro, which they can put in S Mode if they wish.

The new Surface Go Signature Type Cover has ergonomic key pitch, "exceptional" key travel, high-precision tuning, a Windows Precision Trackpad that supports 5-point multi-finger gestures. As of now, there is no information about the global availability.

The Surface Go has a USB-C port for connecting accessories separate from its charging port, as well as a microSD card reader. There's an 8MP camera on the rear also supports HD recording. "At just 1.15 pounds and 8.3 mm thin, Surface Go packs portable performance into a 10" device.

19 injured in South Africa plane crash
The plane had been due to fly later this week to Aviodrome via east Africa, through Egypt, Croatia, Austria to the Netherlands. Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) spokesperson Kabelo Ledwaba said their investigators were on their way to the crash.

The Surface Connect to USB-C Adapter. But the Go's extras separate the two even more in terms of price and functionality, which will only hinder its attempts to make a dent in the Google dominated edtech market.

Talking of visual appeal, no difference, except of course the size, has been made in the latest edition to Surface series.

Battery life is rated at 9 hours, which is a bit short compared to the marathon batteries in more recent Surface devices, but we'll have to see how that holds up in real world use. The black Type Cover costs $99, while the red, blue and silver versions cost $129 each. User reports on Reddit show the issue, though taking a trip to demonstration units at any nearby big-box retailer may offer a better visualization of the wear. The new 10-inch tablet is available now for pre-order in the USA and several other countries and is priced competitively to the iPad Mini, with a $399 price tag for the 64-GB storage option, and $549 for a 128-GB version.

The pre-orders of Surface Go will begin on July 10 and it will start shipping from the next month.

Microsoft announced its new Surface Go, debuting a new system that should serve as an appropriate follow-up for the Surface 3 and a rare mainstream, affordable win for the space.
