Reaching the final caps a hugely impressive 2018 for Lovren, who came through a hard run of form for Liverpool to play a key part in reaching the UEFA Champions League final in May.

Not only that though, he believes he now deserves to be viewed as one of the best defenders in world football.

Croatia seemed on the ropes when Kieran Trippier gave England an early lead, but they hit back in the second half through Ivan Perisic before grabbing a victor in extra-time through Mario Mandzukic.

"People said I had a hard season but I don't agree with that".

"Since I came in, maybe Dejan made three or four mistakes, two of them in the Tottenham game, maybe one in a Champions League game previous year. People should recognise that I am also one of the best defenders in the world and not just talk nonsense".

Lovren and his team-mates helped shackle England captain Harry Kane during last night's 2-1 extra time victory, and will now face France in Sunday's decider.

And he is delighted that this current Croatian generation have finally lived up to, and now surpassed, the standards of the 1998 team which reached the semi-finals.

"It was quite tough first half, we couldn't control the ball and they had good chances" he admitted. People are crying, they are happy in our country.

He continued: "This is something we'll never forget". People should respect us.

"After 20 years, people will remember us, not only the '98 team".

'In extra-time we showed we are still able with the fatigue to play our game'. "Now we have a chance to do something even better".

"I really don't understand these questions, always looking back to where I made some mistakes", he said.

Lovren added that Luka Modric should be in line to win the Ballon d'Or following his excellent performances for Croatia, if they manage to beat France in Sunday's final.
