Trump says Attorney-General should stop Mueller probe 'right now'

Prosecutor Uzo Asonye told the jury during his opening statement that Manafort considered himself above the law as he funneled tens of millions of dollars through offshore accounts.

As the trial of President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort moved into its second day on Wednesday, Trump called for an end to a special counsel's probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 us election that spawned the charges.

At the center of much of the trial will be Gates, another Trump campaign aide who spent years working for Manafort in Ukraine and is also accused of helping him falsify paperwork used to obtain the bank loans.

"It's a lot, and Paul Manafort trusted that Rick Gates was keeping track of it", Zehnle said.

Mr. Gates, who oversaw some of the financial dealings of Mr. Manafort's consulting business, was expected to be a key witness for the government.

Prosecutors have said they don't plan to offer evidence related to the Russian Federation case, and that references to Manafort's association with the Trump campaign will be limited.

The trial heads into its second day Wednesday, a day after the jury was seated, both sides presented their opening statements and the government's first witness took the stand.

Paul Manafort is being tried in Alexandria, Va., on 18 counts of tax and bank fraud.

Mueller's team said it would not present evidence at the trial in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Virginia, about possible campaign collusion with Russian Federation, potentially saving it for a second Manafort trial in Washington in September.

Before the start of jury selection Tuesday, prosecutors filed an expanded list of its evidence exhibits, including several email chains between Manafort and Stephen Calk, the Chicago bank chairman.

Emery backs Ozil over decision to quit Germany
Arsenal manager Unai Emery has supported Mesut Ozil's decision to quit Germany's national team. Emery said: 'It is a personal decision from Mesut and I respect it.

Ellis has scolded members of Mueller's team before, asserting back in May that the team was really interested in targeting President Trump.

The trial is a major test for Mueller's team, which is facing a fresh onslaught of attacks from President Donald Trump and Republicans, who are using lies and exaggerations to blast Mueller and his investigators as biased against the president. Trump tweeted Tuesday morning.

"Of course, there will be no evidence about that", the judge added, and said that oligarchs are merely rich people. "His trust in Rick Gates was misplaced", Zehnle said, accusing Gates of embezzling millions of dollars from Manafort.

Six men and six women, along with four alternate jurors, were chosen on Tuesday.

"I don't anticipate that a government witness will utter the word 'Russia,"' Andres said.

The sharp words marked a dramatic opening to the trial, in keeping with the notoriously fast-moving Eastern District Court of Virginia, which lawyers often refer to as home to the "rocket docket".

Today, Trump is invoking one of the nation's most notorious criminals in venting about the treatment of Manafort as he begins trial.

They said he did not wilfully mislead or deceive the Internal Revenue Service, and that he was betrayed by Gates, who pleaded guilty to making false statements after being indicted by Mueller.

But it was clear from the outset that the case would not address these questions: Prosecutors did not once reference Manafort's work for the Trump campaign.
