Donald Trump's in-laws obtain United States citizenship through immigration programme he opposes

First lady Melania Trump's parents are now U.S. citizens.

First lady Melania Trump's parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, became US citizens on Thursday, taking advantage of a program that President Trump has long railed against.

The couple is originally from Slovenia.

President Donald Trump's in-laws, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, took the oath of citizenship, Wildes said.

Under immigration statutes, the Knavses would have needed to have their green cards for at least five years to apply for citizenship, along with fulfilling character, residency and civic knowledge requirements.

President Trump has railed against family-based or "chain" immigration in the past.

Melania Trump became a citizen in 2006 after obtaining a green card.

"This vital reform is necessary, not just for our economy, but for our security, and our future", he said.

It's unclear whether Mr and Mrs Knavs had their green cards granted by a process the President Trump has sought to end.

While the President never mentions Saipov, who obtained his green card through the equally maligned diversity lottery, he has been known to detail the attack. She moved to the United States in 1996.

United States sets date for additional China tariffs
The United States will begin collecting 25 percent tariffs on another $16 billion in Chinese goods on August 23, the U.S. Trade Representative's office said on Tuesday as it published a final tariff list targeting 279 imported product lines .

Viktor and Amalija Knavs had been living in the USA as permanent residents.

Mr Knavs, 74, was a auto dealer, while his wife, who is 73, worked in a textile factory.

Their son-in-law has frequently attacked United States immigration laws, calling them the "dumbest laws on immigration in the world".

Amalija and Viktor Knavs, parents of first lady Melania Trump, walk on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, in June 2017. That type of family visa is exactly one of the categories that Trump and his allies have tried to repeal, saying they are harmful to the US.

The president proposed replacing most family-based immigration with a skills-based system after an attempted bombing by a Bangladeshi immigrant in NY last December. She was in Bedminster, New Jersey, at the Trump National Golf Club, where Trump is now staying.

She settled in NY in 1996, met the future president two years later and became his third wife in 2005. The Knavses came and went from the ceremony at a Manhattan federal building flanked by Homeland Security police.

She attended high school in the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, and changed her name to Melania Knauss when she started modeling.

Melania Trump became a U.S. citizen after entering the country on an Einstein visa for "individuals of extraordinary ability" in 2001 as a model.

Their daughter, Melania, was raised under Communist rule in the town of Sevnica where her father worked as a vehicle dealer and her mom in a textile factory.

He went on: "It seems like we now have two immigration systems. Those many people are not doing us right". "We saw an example of that today".
