Michigan Governor’s Race: Whitmer To Face Schuette In November

According to the unofficial results at press time from Ballotpedia, with 100 percent of precincts reporting, Schuette won the Republican race with 494,297 votes, Whitmer edged out her Democratic competitors with 585,498 votes, and Libertarian candidate Gelineau received 3,503 votes.

Bill Schuette beat out fellow Republicans, Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley, State Senator Patrick Colbeck, and Saginaw doctor, Jim Hines. "I am proud of our state. You have to understand how things work to get things done", said Karen Rozanski, 67, of St. Clair Shores, who voted for Whitmer.

In Kansas, the polarizing secretary of state, Kris W. Kobach, an ardent Trump loyalist, was seeking the Republican nomination for governor after receiving the president's backing a day earlier.

Green Party candidate Jennifer Kurland was unopposed in the primary.

In choosing Whitmer, Michigan voters opted for a known quantity; a former state legislator, she was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2000.

Whitmer, a former legislative leader, defeated chemical-testing businessman Shri Thanedar and ex-Detroit health director Abdul El-Sayed in Tuesday's primary.

She said even Republican-leaning women in Oakland County north of Detroit are volunteering for her campaign.

Schuette, who had been accused by Calley of misusing his public office for political business, also sought to bring Republicans together and criticized Whitmer.

"The reality is, this is President Trump's Republican party. I like lower taxes", he said. Democrats have hammered the administration across the state recently for Trump's protectionist steel tariffs, which they say are raising prices on everyday goods and hurting MI workers.

Whitmer would not be Michigan's first female governor, nor has she made the anti-Trump resistance movement a centerpiece of her campaign, instead focusing on issues such as road repairs, school funding and water.

In other races that will be closely watched this fall, Democrats nominated former national security official Elissa Slotkin and former state Rep. Gretchen Driskell for Republican-held House seats in southeastern MI. Slotkin, a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst in Iraq who served in the Defense Department under President Barack Obama, is a third-generation Michigander who has said she entered the race after being enraged by Republican attempts to replace the Affordable Care Act.
