Why 'Fortnite' bypassing Google Play could be a security nightmare

Epic Games recently made the controversial decision to release the Android version of Fortnite on its own website rather than through the Google Play Store.

However, to get the game you will have to install it from a third-party source, which is a bit more complicated than just visiting the Google Play Store.

There is no Fortnite Google Play Store listing because Epic Games is bypassing the world's largest app store.

The Fortnite beta for Android was announced yesterday during the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2018 event by Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney. On top of that, only owners of certain Samsung smartphones were able to play the game at launch. Perhaps the developer intends to profit from the first early wave of adopters, which will be massive given the time users have waited for the game to arrive on Android. There's only one title (Battle Breakers), and it's not available yet. As spotted by a Reddit user, searching for Fortnite or Fortnite Battle Royale will yield a warning saying the game isn't available on the Play Store. We can only assume that when the game leaves beta, it will be available to any Android device that can handle it. Apple doesn't allow app downloads from anywhere but the official App Store on its mobile devices.

Because there are no Android servers yet, this is the only way for Android players to get into a live game now. Fortnite Android is one of - if not the - most talked about apps available today, and the battle royale trend has been around for a while.

If more developers follow Epic's path, then the road to unauthorized and potentially harmful downloads on Android devices will only widen.
