Firefighters Make Gains Against California Fires

A combination of state, federal and worldwide crews are struggling to establish 50 miles of fire line, Tisinger said - but with 93 percent of the River Fire under control, there is a tremendous sense of relief among those battling the flames.

Thick smoke and ash spewing from the fire prompted air quality warnings.

Crews were also working on the 35-hectare Devil Creek Fire, which is posing unique challenges to firefighters.

"We may be nearly close to containment but there's still a lot of work that needs to be done", Efird said. The fire is burning near the Mendocino National Forest, about 140 miles northwest of Sacramento. "This is a very hard time for the Draper City Fire Department, our Draper City staff, and all firefighters still fighting the wildfires in California". It has consumed 201,680 acres so far and is 61% contained.

The Mendocino Complex Unified Incident Commanders from CAL FIRE, and the United States Forest Service are deeply saddened to report the death of a firefighter on the Mendocino Complex.

Among 14 active wildfires across California, the Holy Fire started on August 6 in Holy Jim Canyon of the Cleveland National Forest. It was 63 percent contained as of Monday afternoon, Cal Fire said.

On Sunday Zinke posted images to Twitter of destruction in Shasta County. The River Fire, the other part of the Mendocino-Complex Fire is 93 percent contained. This comes as the River Fire of the two Mendocino Complex Fires has now reached 100% containment. The fires had burned a combined total of 325,226 acres and was 67 percent contained. "With low humidity, high heat and low moisture, fire season just seems to be getting longer and longer". As it has grown to cover more than 202,000 acres, 1,077 homes, 22 commercial structures and 500 other buildings have burned.
