New Australian PM gets to work; government support plummets

Julie Bishop is expected to quit as foreign minister under new Prime Minister Scott Morrison, but stay in parliament until the next election.

However, despite Turnbull stepping aside, Dutton again failed in his bid for the Liberal leadership, with Morrison winning the vote 45-40 to become the new Liberal Party leader and Australia's 30th Prime Minister.

Morrison flew to rural western Queensland state, where crops are failing and ranchers are struggling to feed sheep and cattle after six years of drought.

Mr Hadley said he then passed the information on to Mr Abbott, "as most good broadcasters would do".

However, the poll found that the LNP would perform better if Julie Bishop, who served as deputy leader of the Liberal Party for 11 years, had won the leadership ballot.

The survey of 1,783 voters for The Australian newspaper over the weekend also pointed to a large swing towards Labor leader Bill Shorten as preferred prime minister.

After five years in the role Bishop has now told new Prime Minister Scott Morrison that she no longer wants the job.

The possibility that Ms Bishop could leave Parliament before the next election will be a major concern for Mr Morrison, Mr Turnbull's former treasurer, because it opens the possibility of another by-election being held for her seat.

Track Hurricane Lane as it approaches Hawaii
Hawaiians have been urged to buckle down with supplies as the island prepares to be hit by Hurricane Lane, a Category 4 cyclone. The Vancouver (YVR) airport also has multiple flights from other airlines to the Hawaiian Islands listed as cancelled.

That decision could have serious implications for Morrison's government, which has a parliamentary majority of only one seat.

As assistant environment minister, Ms Price has been responsible for climate adaptation and resilience, biodiversity, chemicals, waste, air quality and ozone policy, and was the director of Australia's national parks.

Only 6 percent chose Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, who was defeated by Morrison on Friday as the best leadership candidate.

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said the polls reflected a week of division and disorder.

Karen Andrews will take on the role as Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, making her the first female federal Cabinet Minister from the Gold Coast.

Australia's former health minister was quoted as saying that Morisson is among the "next generation of leadership" and is one of two people who are equipped of extraordinary capability and credibility.

"Everything I have achieved for Australia in public life has been due to you, build on the foundation of this community, which Lucy and I love and where we have always lived". Morrison, who Turnbull described as a loyal treasurer, excluded Abbott from his first Cabinet but has offered him a newly created role of special envoy for indigenous affairs.
