Champions League draw: Pots for groups confirmed

Champions League draw: Pots for groups confirmed

Scottish champions Celtic miss out on Thursday's draw having been knocked out by AEK Athens in the third qualifying round earlier this month.

Manchester United are in pot 2 along with Tottenham and will therefore face one of the top tier sides but both teams will be praying to be drawn against Lokomotiv Moscow.

Last season's beaten finalists were handed a very favourable group a year ago, which they topped ahead of Sevilla, Spartak Moscow and Maribor, and will be hoping for more of the same this time around.

Manchester City now stand as favourites to win the tournament come June, at 5/1.

Holders Real, Europa League holders Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Lokomotiv Moscow complete Pot 1.

Meanwhile, pot three contains some seriously good teams that could cause Dortmund some serious problems.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool will be in pot three alongside Schalke, Lyon, Monaco, Ajax, CSKA Moscow, Valencia and PSV Eindhoven. Pots two to four are determined by the club coefficient rankings.

Arizona sports teams, athletes react to death of Sen. John McCain
Meghan McCain, a co-host of " The View ", was fiercely loyal to her father. "We know that his flame lives on, in each of us". Although he and I sometimes disagreed, I was deeply privileged to serve with him and proud to call him a friend.

Club Brugge, Galatasaray, Young Boys, Inter Milan, Hoffenheim and AEK Athens have all been confirmed for pot four.

El Fardou Ben Nabouhane scored twice in as many minutes midway through the second half to see Red Star advance to the group stage for the first time since the year after their competition win. But the draw could make some interesting ties and it is very possible that Borussia Dortmund could be in the group of death once again.

The one surprise in Wednesday night's play-offs was the elimination of RB Salzburg by Red Star Belgrade, who came back from 2-0 down in Austria to draw 2-2 and advance on away goals.

Another team taking their place in the second best pot is a certain Manchester United.

The Anfield outfit made it all the way to the final last season only to be beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid in Kiev.

Liverpool will discover their Champions League fate for the upcoming season when the draw for the group stage is made on Thursday evening in Monaco. They may have reached the final last time out, but Benfica have pipped them to Pot 2 on the basis of long-term consistency.
