John Millman punishes under-par Roger Federer in stunning US Open upset

In a stunning upset, five-time US Open champion and world Number 2 Roger Federer was eliminated from the tournament by 55th-ranked Australian John Millman.

7-6 (7/3) victory in his first Grand Slam fourth round match scuppered a blockbuster quarter-final between Federer and two-time victor Novak Djokovic.

Naomi Osaka became the first Japanese woman to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam in 14 years, edging Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in a matchup of 20-year-olds.

When asked if he would be watching Federer's match, Djokovic said: "Well I'm going to first try and put the kids to sleep".

"I just couldn't get into my game".

"I felt like a deer in the headlights to begin with, to be honest", he said.

Federer hung his head at a changeover, a little black fan pointed right at his face, but nothing seemed to make him feel like himself. Roger had it on a string, he was manipulating me around the court.

"I've got to control the controllable and the one thing I can control is the fight in me".

But Millman knows there's no friends on court when playing for a US Open quarter-final berth.

Djokovic has sweated his way to a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 fourth round win over Joao Sousa as the heat returned to the US Open.

That remains Nishikori's best Grand Slam showing.

Next up for Keys, who was routed by Sloane Stephens in last year's final, is the victor of the evening clash between five-times Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova and Spanish 30th seed Carla Suarez Navarro.

Djokovic, the reigning Wimbledon champion, improved to 28-0 against players ranked outside the top 50 at the US Open.

"I'm not 21 anymore". "Sometimes, you just have to survive".

He reached the quarterfinals for an 11th consecutive appearance in NY as he bids for a third US Open championship and 14th Grand Slam trophy.
