Majerhat Flyover Collapses in Kolkata, Rescue Operations Underway

At least one person was killed and scores others sustained serious injuries after a portion of arterial Majerhat bridge in south Kolkata collapsed on Tuesday, police said.

Teams of the National Disaster Response Force were helping to clear the debris and look for people who may be trapped below, police said.

Circular Railway services were also affected after the bridge collapse, an Eastern Railway spokesperson said. Rescue teams, disaster management teams, Police CP, firefighters already at the spot.

The Chief Minister, who is on an administrative visit to Darjeeling, said that a high-powered committee headed by the state Chief Secretary would probe the collapse.

"We have to take into account the safety aspect while clearing the debris", he said. Action will be taken against those whose negligence caused the accident. "I pray that those who are injured recover at the earliest", Modi said in a tweet. My thoughts are with the families of the victims.

It is possible that not many are trapped under the collapsed part of the bridge. Locals said that even though the bridge had been painted blue and white - the colour of the Trinamool Congress government - it was dilapidated and had grass growing on its edges.

Manchester United are now 13th place in the early-season standings after suffering back-to-back defeats, following up their 3-2 setback at Brighton with a 3-0 loss at home to Tottenham on Monday night.

According to a state official, the 40-year-old bridge was constructed by the Kolkata Port Trust and the bridge was maintained by the State Public Works Department. President Ram Nath Kovind said he was "sorry to learn" about the partial bridge collapse.

Movement on the Budge Budge-Sealdah railway line has been stopped for the time being.

The rescue operations at Kolkata's Majerhat Bridge collapse site will continue through the night.

Televised images from the accident site showed a section about 30m long that had dropped to the ground, reported Associated Press.

In March 2016, part of a bridge under construction collapsed in the busy Burrabazar area of Kolkata, killing 26 people and injuring 90.

Over two years after an under-construction flyover collapsed in Kolkata, the tragedy has once again struck West Bengal's capital city.
