Florence expected to become hurricane, heads to southeast US

For us, though, if it continue along this path, and favors the right of the track, we would be further from the center of the storm, and on the left side, which tends to be the cleaner and calmer side.

Hurricane track and intensity forecasts often have wide margins of error beyond five days, and with Florence computer models have struggled to accurately predict what the storm will do. While forecasters say it's too soon to determine the exact timing and a possible landfall for the storm, people from SC to the mid-Atlantic region should closely monitor the approaching storm. It's expected to strengthen through Tuesday before beginning to weaken.

Florence was expected to approach the southeastern coast of the United States on Thursday, possibly near the North Carolina-South Carolina border, according to maps of the storm's trajectory predicted by the NHC.

Throughout the weekend, Virginia Department of Emergency Management teams have worked to prepare for Florence, which strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane Sunday.

Forecasters expect the hurricane to undergo rapid intensification, becoming a major hurricane as it spins toward the East Coast.

As of 5 p.m. EDT, Florence was centered about 720 miles (1,160 kilometers) southeast of Bermuda, moving west at 7 mph (11 kmh).

In southeast Virginia, Naval Station Norfolk told its employees they should not leave their vehicles parked at the sprawling base in coming days because of the flood threat. As NPR's Bill Chappell reported, the town of Mountain View on the Big Island recorded 51.53 inches of rain as a result of Lane, the third-highest total ever measured from a USA storm.

Most forecast models point to Florence's eye hitting the southeast coast sometime on September 14, said Anthony Chipriano, a meteorologist at Radiant Solutions in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

The storm "is too powerful and its path is too uncertain to take any chances", South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster said in issuing his state´s emergency declaration.

"Whatever happens, we're going to have a lot of rain and a lot of wind, even if the hurricane goes farther north", McMaster said.

McMaster, predicting a "likely strong hit on SC", stressed that residents should begin planning now to evacuate if necessary. Meanwhile, Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune urged residents to secure their homes, but said it's too early to know if evacuations will be ordered. "Action today can avoid losses due to Florence". Instead the ship will now head to The Bahamas. It is not out of the question that Florence could become a Category 5 hurricane at some point.

Officials say Tropical Storm Helene is approaching islands off the western coast of Africa. He also urged residents to "review your emergency plans and gather your supplies now".

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division tweeted Sunday that officials there are "preparing for the possibility of a large-scale disaster". "I can't find another example of a hurricane/typhoon nearing Guam, Hawaii & the eastern United States at nearly exactly the same time (days ~ 4,5,6 respectively)".

Forecasters predicted it would become a risky Category 4 storm before a possible landfall Friday.

While hurricanes pose the greatest threat to life and property, tropical storms and depression also can be devastating.

The storm has sustained winds of 75 miles per hour.

Helene is moving west-northwest at 13 miles per hour, packing maximum-sustained winds of 85 miles per hour.
