As for Nixon, honestly, she probably has a pretty advanced palate, so I trust her judgement. Supporters rallied to Nixon's defense by pointing to the shoddy basis of the mailer's accusations and the fact that Nixon - who is not herself Jewish - is raising two Jewish sons from a previous relationship.

But winning state-wide is tough, especially for a first-timer up against the well-oiled and seriously well-funded machinery of a two-time governor running for his third term.

"To break through, that requires a lot of money and organization", he told AFP.
