iOS 12 is compatible with all iPhone devices beyond the 5S (including iPhone SE), while the compatible iPads include iPad Mini 2, 3 and 4, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad Pro, 6th and 5th-generation iPads. Many major apps have already incorporated Shortcuts into their iOS 12 updates.

Taking a stroll through Apple's Shortcuts app presents all kinds of new possibilities.

If you're the sort who will want to pull the trigger on upgrading to iOS 12 the moment it's released, there are some steps that you should take so you don't end up in a world of hurt.

Before you go ahead and install watchOS 5, it's important to know that the update is not available for the original Apple Watch model.

Be sure to check out Apple's official Shortcuts User Guide too, where they have updated the Workflow documentation for the new Shortcuts app and improved the layout so you can dig in.

If you don't like dealing with bugs, holding back for a few days might be the wise thing to do.

However, if you generally fall on the cautious side, or if you depend on your devices to work properly, here's our advice on when you should think about installing these new versions. In addition to the name change, the app gets a new lick of paint to make it easier to navigate.

Apple has released at least 10.14.1, if not 10.14.2.

Alternatively, you can connect the iPhone or iPad to a PC running iTunes and do the upgrade from there. Apple has this tool covered, thanks developers. And if you use two-factor authentication-which you should-iOS 12 will even auto-fill two-factor authentication codes that come in as text messages, saving you the hassle. The bedtime Do Not Disturb will dim the display and hide all notifications on the lock screen until a prompt in the morning.

As usual, Siri gets a little smarter in iOS 12: Apple says Siri is now better at answering questions about motorsport, celebrities, and food (try "how much caffeine is there in coffee?").

When you tap on a group, you'll see a Show Less button at the top of the list to collapse the group back down into one stack of notifications. That means you can use some apps to tell Siri to snap a photo, or take a note.
