Bunker operations resume in Hong Kong after Typhoon Mangkhut

Bunker operations resume in Hong Kong after Typhoon Mangkhut

The death toll in the Philippines from Typhoon Mangkhut has climbed to 81 and could hit triple digits as searchers dig through a landslide where dozens are presumed dead, authorities said Wednesday.

Dozens of residents sought shelter during the storm on Saturday despite warning it was unsafe.

Rescuers are scrambling to dig up the landslide site, but they find at least 70 people who are still missing, majority buried alive by a landslide in the mining municipality of Itogon in Benguet province from the northern Philippines.

Even though Philippine authorities say it's highly unlikely any of the people feared buried in a mudslide would be found alive, Ulani said he was desperate to help.

Mum-of three Gill Friend has spoken of the terror they experienced as typhoon Mangkhut tore through the area.

All that rain is flooding the rice fields in the country's biggest rice-producing region, which could cause lasting effects to the food supply. The search and rescue operation was suspended at nightfall and was to resume at daybreak Monday, said Palangdan, the mayor.

Authorities reported more than 1,500 reports of fallen trees and over 500 reports of broken windows, totals that far exceed those seen after typhoon Hato struck Hong Kong past year. Another bus "was sent to rescue the group and bring them back to their hotel", said the DFA.

Overall, at least 64 people have died in typhoon-related incidents in the northern Philippines, mostly from landslides and collapsed houses, according to the national police.

Rescuers were scrambling to pull out the body of a victim from the mound of mud and rocks in Ucab before Tacio, the police official, left the area Sunday.

"We are very optimistic that we can finish this with the assistance of all the sectors, of the military and civilian side, as well as the local government units", she said.

The strongest typhoon of the season swept the north of the island of Luzon on Saturday.

Numerous missing in the Philippines are gold miners and their families feared buried in a landslide after seeking shelter in a bunkhouse-turned-chapel in a village in Benguet province.

The storm was still affecting southern China's coast and the provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan, and rain and strong winds were expected to continue through today. The Hong Kong Observatory reported Mangkhut was the most powerful cyclone to hit the city since 1979.

"It hurts a lot", said 27-year-old Jonathan Dunuan.

Many of those buried in Itogon were small-scale gold miners and their families who took refuge in a building abandoned by a large mining firm.
