Mikel Arteta: Pep Guardiola's absence not to blame for Manchester City loss

Mikel Arteta: Pep Guardiola's absence not to blame for Manchester City loss

The woodwork came to Lyon's rescue in the 17th minute as Jason Denayer, on loan from City, deflected Raheem Sterling's effort onto the crossbar. We were well aware of Lyon's strengths and weaknesses and we were ready to make a fresh start in this competition, the way we went out last season [to Liverpool] really hurt. We are used to making decisions at half-time every time, me and Pep, when we discuss things we have to change. "If he would have been on the touchline I couldn't say if we would have won 5-0 or lost 3-0".

Mikel Arteta has confirmed that he did consider leaving Manchester City to take the Arsenal job over the summer but is "very happy" working under Pep Guardiola.

Guardiola has been trying to guard against complacency but Arteta insisted his side were fully aware of how risky Lyon were, despite their poor start to the season, which has seen them win two and lose two of their five opening Ligue 1 games.

With Hoffenheim and Shakhtar Donetsk also in Group F, City appeared to have one of the kinder draws but is now playing catch-up.

"Maybe they thought... we are not very good in Ligue 1, you know".

For the reigning Premier League champions, however, it seems like they might have been lacking the fan support they would have wanted.

Manafort, 69, entered the courtroom with a broad smile, wearing a dark suit and red tie, and mouthed a kiss to his wife. After his arrest in October, he was detained by the court in his Alexandria, Virginia, home for more than eight months.

Aymeric Laporte nearly broke the deadlock for Pep Guardiola's charges in the 17th minute with a header at the back post, but unfortunately his effort came off the crossbar.

That flat atmosphere transferred into a City first-half display riddled with uncharacteristic errors.

Arteta is looking forward to the opportunity of taking charge for Wednesday's game and said he expects to become a manager one day.

"We have a fantastic momentum and there is still a lot of room for this club to grow - so I am very pleased with where I am".

The defeat was a fourth-straight Champions League disappointment for City, who lost both legs of last season's quarterfinal against Liverpool and the second leg of their last-16 clash against Basel.
