Yankees set single-season home run record with 265th of season

The New York Yankees set a Major League Baseball record for home runs in a season when rookie second baseman Gleyber Torres hit a two-run homer in the second inning against the Boston Red Sox.

Baseball fans in New England won't be forgetting about this magical 2018 season for their beloved Boston Red Sox any time soon.

Torres also hit the team's 20th home run from the No. 9 spot in the batting order, making them the first team in Major League Baseball history with 20 or more home runs from every spot in the lineup.

With a 100-RBI season, Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts has finally broken out as a consistent offensive force in the Sox lineup.

Rick Porcello, the 2016 AL Cy Young victor, is expected to start Game 3 of the AL Division Series, and Nathan Eovaldi is the likely starter for Game 4 against the Yankees, who beat Oakland 7-2 in the wild-card game to advance. Hitting coach Marcus Thames signaled for its retrieval, too, as did Triple-A pitching coach Tommy Phelps, but if anyone in the Red Sox dugout noticed, it was too.

The most important thing that happened on Friday was not the record-tying home runs. He said he watched Tuesday night's NL wild-card game head into extra innings and was already anticipating the second-guessing over the way Cubs manager Joe Maddon used his bullpen. The Red Sox jumped to leads of 4-0 after one inning, 7-0 after two and emptied the bench as planned over the next seven.

Rookie Voit hit his 13th home run in the seventh against Pomeranz.

"I loved the way we fought", Red Sox manager Alex Cora said.

And now the Yankees don't have to fly cross country to play in a hostile environment, where even a win would lead to turning around and flying right back to Boston.

The Red Sox took it slow with Sale upon his latest return from the disabled list, and the southpaw struggled a bit with his mechanics while also suffering a noticeable dip in his velocity. That followed a poor stretch, where he went 0-2 with a 9.16 ERA in four starts.

Stanton, who didn't seem to be hurt in the slightest by the ball, was impressed himself, looking up at the fans on the Green Monster and giving them a smile and a salute as he trotted his way to home base to put the Yankees up 8-2 in the second game of the teams' final series of the regular season. The Yankees said it was not injury-related and only to give Stanton some rest.

"I'll be happy to take something like that, especially knowing only two people win it", Betts said.

"Admit it, Sox fans". Andujar finished the regular season with 47 doubles. The Yankees ended up winning the game 8-5. Almost all season, Boston's bullpen has been a question mark, despite a 3.60 ERA as a group that ranks fourth in the AL.

Red Sox: RF Mookie Betts was not in the lineup.

The last time they secured home field advantage throughout the playoffs was in 2013, which was the last time they won the World Series.
