Nikki Haley resigns as United Nations ambassador

"And they do a lot of things behind the scenes that I wish more people knew about, because we're a better country because they're in this administration".

Haley said that the post had been an honor of a lifetime, but felt like she needed to step aside after serving six years as the governor of SC and nearly two years as the United Nations ambassador. She also often sides even more strongly with Israel than Trump, who has pushed US policy away from its officially neutral stance on the conflict with the Palestinians.

Dina Powell, a former Goldman Sachs executive who served in the Bush White House and State Department, and later as Trump's Deputy National Security Advisor, was one of the first names to be uttered as the next possible United Nations ambassador.

Though Haley was an early critic of President Trump during the Republican primaries, she has taken to strongly defending him during her time working for his administration even as some have been skeptical of her political ambition.

Haley, who previously served as the governor of SC from 2010 to 2016, thanked Trump and said serving in his administration was "an honor of a lifetime". The president said Haley told him six months ago she would be leaving at the end of the year. Haley had expressed some frustration that her voice had been diminished as the two men became the aggressive new faces of Trump's foreign policy, the official said.

In a tweet, the president teased a "big announcement" Tuesday morning and referred to Haley as his "friend".

"But I don't agree with the president on everything". Haley's debts include a string of liabilities incurred over her years in the Trump administration and S.C. government.

Kavanaugh does not belong on Supreme Court, retired Justice Stevens says
The judge passed through a procedural vote on Friday and is expected to be narrowly confirmed on Saturday. Stevens retired from the Supreme Court in 2010, after serving for more than 35 years.

Haley was formerly the governor of SC.

Haley said it is an honor of lifetime to serve the country she loves so much. She represents the Trump administration's agenda in the United Nations, a body the president has long criticized.

After a frosty relationship with Rex Tillerson, Trump's first secretary of state, she and Tillerson's successor, Mike Pompeo, often exchanged mutual praise. She had scripted history by becoming the first-ever Indian-American to be appointed to a cabinet-level post in any USA administration. The "news shocked a number of senior foreign policy officials in the Trump administration", Swan reported.

Her status as a potential candidate for national high office was boosted in 2015 when she ordered the Confederate battle flag to be pulled down at South Carolina's state capitol grounds after a white supremacist gunman shot dead nine black worshipers at a church in Charleston.

In turn, Trump credited Haley with bringing glamour to the U.N. Ambassador's post while lavishly praising her for doing a "fantastic job".

Her condemnation of Iran was supported by Israel. "They know that if we say we're going to do something, we follow it through", she said.
