Jamal Khashoggi murder planned days ahead, says Turkey's Erdogan

Trudeau's comments on halting the huge arms deal came amid increasing pressure to punish Riyadh for the killing of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Omer Celik, spokesman of Mr Erdogan's ruling party, said the killing "was planned in an extremely savage manner", and that "there has been a lot of effort to whitewash this".

"A severe smear campaign has been initiated in Saudi Arabia against myself", she told Turkish daily newspaper Sabah on October 11, more than a week after her fiance disappeared.

"First they (the Saudis implicated) removed the hard disc from the camera system", Erdogan said. All of the identified individuals have since left Turkey.

18 people have been detained and 6 senior officials dismissed as part of the investigation.

Erdogan also cast Turkey in the role of global statesman, echoing calls for full Saudi accountability from Western allies whose relationships with the Turkish government have often been edgy in the past.

He said the killing was planned in advance and called on Saudi Arabia to reveal more details, including where Khashoggi's body was.

Erdogan and his government have still not released the audio evidence they claim to have of Khashoggi's murder. His disappearance set off an worldwide uproar.

Khashoggi vanished after he entered the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to retrieve marriage documents. His fiancée, who was waiting outside, alerted friends and authorities when he never emerged. Khashoggi's doppelganger was seen at various locations after the scribe was last seen walking into the Saudi consulate, with CNN reporting that the body double was seen exiting the consulate's back door after 90 minutes of Khashoggi's arrival at the premises.

The Turkish government immediately launched an investigation, and within days, authorities told US intelligence and news outlets that evidence suggested Khashoggi had been killed and dismembered upon entering the consulate.

After Saudi Arabia admitted that the killing of the journalist took place in their own consulate, Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel took the lead in issuing a punishment.

The prince appeared briefly at an afternoon panel Tuesday alongside Jordan's King Abdullah II, but made no public remarks.

Much of their effort is on ensuring those in the West, who they accuse of overlooking injustice and repression in the kingdom, don't try to assist what they see as a Saudi effort to exonerate the crown prince, who they firmly believe ordered the killing.

Russian Federation sent a large delegation led by Direct Investment Fund head Kirill Dmitriev, who said Saudi Arabia's economic transformation was "important for the world" and that partnerships between sovereign wealth funds was a "great opportunity".

Saudi Arabia remains one of the world's largest arms importers.

Turkey's government has also told US officials it possesses audio and video footage of the journalist's killing, according to multiple news outlets. The Russian Direct Investment Fund is leading a big delegation of executives to the prince's investment forum this week, even as western executives and officials are staying away over the Khashoggi case. "And today's speech is part of a very careful - in my opinion - escalation strategy", said Ahmet Kasim Han, an worldwide relations analyst at Altinbas University in Istanbul.
