NYPD investigating new suspicious package found in New York City building

Who were the bombs sent to?

Suspicious packages addressed to actor Robert De Niro and former Vice President Joe Biden were intercepted Thursday, and investigators said they were similar to crude pipe bombs sent to former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and CNN.

A bomb addressed to former Central Intelligence Agency director John Brennan was sent to the headquarters of CNN, a media outlet that has been critical of the president.

The FBI said a package, "similar in appearance to the others" found this week, was addressed to Booker and located in Florida.

U.S. media report that at least some of the packages have been sent from Florida. Holder's package ended up rerouted and delivered to the Wasserman Schultz return address.

A second package, addressed to Obama, was found early on Wednesday in Washington DC.

The FBI said the package intended for Clinton was found in the vicinity of her residence in Chappaqua, New York, but offered no additional comment, citing the ongoing investigation.

A suspicious package targeting billionaire investor and philanthropist George Soros was rendered safe in Bedford, New York, a law enforcement source told CNN.

The Time Warner Building in New York City, where media organisation CNN is based, was evacuated after receiving a similar package. Mr Brennan is a frequent guest on CNN. The bomb squad was investigating the package discovered at Wasserman Schultz's office, a local police spokesman said. One was intercepted at a Los Angeles mail facility.

Which package was found first? Police alerted the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms and Explosives.

Trump recently endorsed the body-slamming of a reporter, routinely denounces the press as "fake news" and has levelled toxic remarks in the past against the pipe bomb targets.

The "CNN Newsroom" show had to cut interviews short after the alarm was sounded.

USA oil prices up after sharp drop in fuel stocks
The contract rose 39 cents on Wednesday. "We dropped precipitously on the idea global demand is going to slow". Iranian net oil export revenues were estimated at $55 billion previous year , it added.

What was in the packages?

Authorities have branded the parcel bombs, coming less than two weeks before national elections that could alter the balance of power on Capitol Hill, as an act of terrorism, though they have declined to say whether the devices were built to be functional. Kamala Harris, D-California, was also evacuated after "suspicious packages" were found near the building, but they were not addressed to the senator or her office, a spokeswoman tweeted. The devices were being examined by technicians at the FBI's forensic lab in Quantico, Virginia.

How have U.S. political figures responded?

"This is a very painful time in our nation; people are feeling a lot of hatred in the air", said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who described the incident as an "act of terror".

Mrs Clinton called the packages a sign of deep political divisions in the USA, and stressed the need for the country to be united. But Democratic Senate and House leaders Chuck Schumer of NY and Nancy Pelosi of California said such words "ring hollow" when coming from Trump.

"There is a total and complete lack of understanding at the White House about the seriousness of their continued attacks on the media", CNN President Jeff Zucker said in a statement read on CNN.

"The safety of the American people is my highest and absolute priority", Trump said at an event at the White House. It was discovered during routine mail screening procedures Tuesday evening, according to authorities.

Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., who was severely wounded in a 2017 shooting that targeted Republican members of Congress on a suburban baseball field, wrote on Twitter that he had experienced "first-hand the effects of political violence" and said that as a nation "we must agree that this is a unsafe path and it can not become the new normal".

In 2011, Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords survived being shot in the head with a pistol by Jared Lee Loughner in an attack which left six people dead in Arizona.

"We can not tolerate those cowardly attacks, and I strongly condemn all who choose violence", she said.

Police officers visited other "locations associated with the Soros family, his businesses", and then when the devices addressed to Clinton and Obama were discovered, "we really widened our outreach", Miller said.
