Student Shot at Butler HS, Shooter in Custody

The suspect in the case is a fellow student, Matthews Police said. Investigators have the weapon used but have not said what it is.

Students were later released to their anxious parents who had jammed the area around the school, while police spent much of the day interviewing witnesses and combing over the crime scene.

Charlotte Mecklenburg School Superintendent Clayton Wilcox said the school did not have a policy of searching every bag that enters the school, but said all security procedures would be reviewed following the shooting.

A North Carolina high school has been put on lockdown after a student shot and wounded a classmate.

Wilcox said it was not clear how the suspect was able to get a gun into school and noted that not all bags brought onto campus are "actively" searched by staff. Maybe we didn't intervene early enough in a bullying situation.

'This is really sad to see someone go that. has been your friend, for I don't know how many years, ' Sanchez said. "It was that closeness. just being scared and you could never think it was going to happen here".

With the game on the line, Bellinger made a play on the ball before throwing a dart to home plate and catching Kinsler tagging up. Both bullpens were outstanding, and both minimized the damage when both teams scored unusual runs in the weird 13th inning.

He said a school resource officer was in the cafeteria area when he and school security officers heard a commotion in an adjoining hallway at 7:14 a.m.

'There were many kids in the hallway when this happened, ' he said. She said, "I left because of the bullying and the fights".

Guardians and parents were advised of the incident via email and telephone calls.

Classes did proceed on campus for students not retrieved by their parents. WSOC was reporting live that angry parents were gathering around the campus, despite being told they were to wait for updates at nearby Elevation Church on East Independence Boulevard. She said the shooting has the school community in disbelief. The school's lockdown ended at 9:15 a.m. When they arrived to find their children absent, dozens of parents took matters into their own hands, marching over a highway overpass and crossing police barricades to assemble at the doors of the school.
