F1 Raceweek: Red Bull battle could suit champion-elect Hamilton

Max Verstappen (Red Bull) 3.

"I knew the pace was in the vehicle", Ricciardo said. "I've had some of the best races of my career". "I need to save a little serenity for tomorrow".

Hamilton's positive experience at the Mexican Grand Prix mirrored a year ago, when he also won the title at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez at Vettel's expense.

Hamilton, who wants to see out the title which will draw him level with Juan Manuel Fangio on five world championships with a victory, is in striking range of the Red Bulls but, crucially, ahead of his sole rival.

At age 33, he can now make a run at something once previously unthinkable: The seven titles won by Germany's Michael Schumacher.

The Australian was forced to retire for the second consecutive race at Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix, causing his frustrations with his Red Bull auto to bubble to the surface.

Asked how he meant to celebrate his triumph, Hamilton replied: "It is going to sound really boring, but I just feel content and really happy, so I am looking forward to going to sleep".

"It's just gutting for him because he had driven a great race on old tyres, holding off Sebastian [Vettel] before that tell-tale sign of smoke".

Red Bull's 1-2 start was their first front-row lockout since the start of the hybrid engine era in 2014.

In the end it was just 0.026 seconds separating the two Bulls.

"The whole qualifying was c**p", the deflated Dutchman said.

"We were struggling, so I just tried to hold on and bring the auto home". I feel honored to have my name alongside his. Red Bull will be switching to Honda engines. Verstappen was still on the track but his final lap was too slow. A puncture kyboshed Bottas, gifting Hamilton a timely win after cameo roles to leading man Vettel in Australia and Bahrain and to Daniel Ricciardo in China. He's leaving the team for Renault in 2019.

But the 21-year-old endured no such problem in the closing laps of a race he led for the most part, having built up a cushion of nearly 15 seconds over Vettel. "But they're both part of a team, which we'll talk about".

"Big changes were made overnight and to come back here today and put ourselves in contention - we didn't think yesterday with that performance we'd be able to qualify on an ultra [soft]".

"You can understand his emotions are running incredibly high". But it was a run of wins over the second half of the season that sent Hamilton to Mexico City all but assured of the championship.

"For Lewis now, with five titles, unbelievable", said 2016 world champion Rosberg, in a message of congratulations he posted on his YouTube channel after the race.

After putting his Red Bull on pole, Ricciardo was then beaten to the first corner by his team-mate and eventual victor Max Verstappen, before he retired following yet another mechanical failure (his eighth of the year, which is more than any other driver) with just nine laps remaining. A strong start Sunday was followed by a clunky race just to ensure a fourth for the championship.

"You saw what happened past year with the red vehicle behind me", Hamilton said.
