California Wildfires: Malibu Evacuates, Brush Fire Erupts in Griffith Park

With the area still reeling from the shooting at the Thousand Oaks bar, the Hill fire has spread to 10,000 acres, quickly shutting down the 101 Freeway.

As of Thursday evening, it was burning above Cal State University Channel Islands, in the footprint of the 2013 Springs Fire which burned 24,000 acres.

After making the announcement about his home on Twitter this morning, others were quick to offer their support for Derrickson, including The Haunting of Hill House creator, Mike Flanagan. Thousands evacuated, many abandoned their vehicles and fleeing on foot as flames surrounded major roadways in the area. While there have been injuries from the fire, there's no official tally of how many civilians and firefighters were hurt or possibly killed.

In Southern California, the night sky burned orange as the Woolsey Fire in Los Angeles and Ventura counties grew thousands of acres overnight, exploding from 2,000 acres to 7,500 in a matter of hours.

As of Friday, the infernos combined had consumed 18,000 acres (28 square miles) and destroyed at least 75 homes. (Chico is about 90 miles north of Sacramento.) 35 mph winds are hampering efforts to contain the blaze, which has already destroyed the town of Paradise, burning more than 1,000 homes and the town hospital. Almost 2,300 firefighters are battling the flames, but as of Friday morning, it was still zero percent contained.

San Luis Obispo County residents traveling south on Friday into Ventura County and Los Angeles should use caution and be prepared for delays and detours caused by two wildfires that have closed parts of Highway 101 and prompted evacuations.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department tweeted that the fire raging through the Santa Monica Mountains was headed to the ocean.

Evacuation orders were imposed overnight affecting tens of thousands of residents in both counties, and at 10 a.m. Friday, mandatory evacuation orders were expanded to include the entire city of Malibu.

Zoo staff have begun to evacuate some animals - starting with the lemurs - but the fire has not spread as fast as the Malibu blaze due to lighter winds.

A strike team of five fire engines and a battalion chief was sent at about 4 p.m., said Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Jack Crabtree.

Residents posted on social media to share their views of the flames almost consuming the hillside in the Newbury Park area of western Thousand Oaks.

Another fire was burning farther west in Ventura County, also moving toward the ocean. That affects all residents north of the 101 Freeway, south of Bell Canyon Road, west of Valley Circle Boulevard and east of the Los Angeles city limit. The Santa Anas are strong, dry winds that high-pressure systems push from east to west, from the mountains and desert areas down into the Los Angeles area.
