Sophia Floersch fractures spine after huge airborne crash at Macau GP

Sophia Floersch - a German Formula 3 driver - survived a terrifying crash during a race in China that easily could've killed her. but left her with a fractured spine instead.

The teen driver later tweeted she was "fine" but will undergo surgery Monday.

Japanese driver Sho Tsuboi was also taken to hospital, as were two photographers and a marshal. Her speed was estimated at 171.6 miles per hour when the incident occurred.

The race was delayed following the crash. Wickens took to social media last month to share video of himself explaining the true extent of his injuries.

In 2018, she began participating in Formula 3, which is regarded by many as a major stepping stone for Formula 1 hopefuls.

"They are so safe nowadays, you can be pretty damn sure you're gonna walk away [from a crash]", Habsburg said.

"The whole weekend I've just focused on every little drill, ticking every box".

Floersch hit the back of 15th-placed Jehan Daruvala on the flat-out run to Lisboa, and sustained damage to her Van Amersfoort Racing Dallara-Mercedes in the impact.

Floersch was admitted to a nearby hospital in a stable condition and is set for surgery.
